In Sabarimala pilgrimage traditions, a devotee undertaking the Irumudi ritual for the third time is considered as "Manikandan Swami". This title holds deep symbolism, as "Manikandan" means "one with a bell around the neck," recalling the legend of Lord Ayyappa, who was found as an infant with a golden bell around his neck.

During this important third pilgrimage, the devotee’s Irumudi—a sacred bundle carried on the head—is adorned with a bell. Upon reaching the Sannidhanam (sanctum sanctorum), the bell is placed before the deity and later returned to the devotee. This ritual is considered highly auspicious, as it is believed that any wish or request made by the devotee at this time will be granted by Lord Ayyappa.

This practice signifies the devotee’s spiritual advancement and deepened connection with Lord Ayyappa, marking a significant milestone in their journey of faith and devotion.
